Social Media such twitter, facebook and Second Life have been around for some time, but they have only recently been applied for business purposes with variable outcomes. See here for a great overview of the state of the art. More recently, open source version of these social networking platforms have been created to meet the perceived need for these networks to be managed by the businesses themselves as a trade associated to meet privacy concerns. Examples of such platforms include Elgg, OpenSIM, Statusnet. here is the google trends view. the 3D immersive software OpenSIm provides a very different experience, but is still classes as a type of social networking.

Typical Challenge:

Provide a social enterprise with a means to produce a group newsletter with contributions from all in the group.
